A UK and Ireland portfolio providing grid stability, frequency, and voltage regulation services.

Quinbrook’s Synchronous Condenser Portfolio plays a vital role in enhancing grid stability and enabling the UK and Ireland to integrate more renewable energy reliably. These facilities provide essential system support services, such as inertia, voltage regulation, and fault current, that are diminishing with the retirement of conventional thermal power plants.
Representing the UK’s largest and most advanced deployment of synchronous condenser technology. The portfolio includes eight assets either operational or under construction in the UK and Ireland, supported by over GBP 500 million in committed capital.

Key milestones include

  • The construction and operation of Rassau, one of the first privately owned synchronous condensers in the UK to provide stability services under a Pathfinder contract

  • Securing over half the economic contract value of the Pathfinder II programme, with its four Scottish projects

  • The operational launch of Rothienorman and Thurso in Scotland and a landmark GBP 120 million portfolio financing for the Pathfinder I and II projects

  • In July 2025, Quinbrook also marked its first Irish investment with the Wexford Synchronous Condenser Project, expanding this critical grid support strategy beyond the UK. Collectively, these projects support secure electricity supply and enable greater integration of renewables as grids transition to net zero

Quinbrook also retains an interest in a large development portfolio of grid support assets across Ireland and the UK. In addition to investment in the UK and Ireland, Quinbrook intends to continue to grow its grid-stability strategy globally. Utilising the knowledge and relationships gained through the development, construction, and operations of its first eight assets, Quinbrook intends to help grid and transmission operators manage the increasing penetration of variable renewable energy.
